I expected an early season this year, but not frozen precip this early. It is currently forty-five degrees and raining steadily in South Lake Tahoe at lake level, with a chill factor to 39 degrees. Above 7000 feet there is snowfall. Expected lows in the twenties at night this week, which means Heavenly will be kicking in the snowmaking pretty soon. Another storm expected next weekend with more snowfall above 7000 feet. This is good news not only because there's snow in October but also because California is desperately low on water, Folsom Lake and other reservoirs are down up to 30 feet and were closed entirely to boats for the summer.
This is the first significant precipitation since mid-March, that's almost 1/2 a year with zero rainfall.
It wasn't supposed to be a really cold storm because it's the remnants of an Asian typhoon (for those of you that don't track weather, typhoons are hurricanes which survive on solely warm water,) but it seems to have cooled off enough in the Pacific to produce some white gold.
First snowfall of the year, October 4th. If we can get a good storm once a week with artificial snowmaking temperatures at night, I'll be skiing on Halloween, regardless of what parties are going on.
WINTER IS KNOCKIN and I'm going to open the door. Who's ready for an epic season?
